STATEMENT
A shadow can be seen as a drawing because it translates 3D information into 2D format, using edges, value and perspective, like a traditional drawing would. Unlike a traditional drawing a shadow is a stenciled image created without traditional drawing skills... but in our regular world, many originally skilled processes are "deskilled" to allow factory production. A desgner appplies skill up front to create a product, which is then replicated by machinery or less skilled workers. It seems appropriate to approach drawing in a similar way - but with a different ultimate goal. Instead of making products for a factory, I continue being an artist : exploring ideas within our culture.
Looking at painting and drawing as expanded concepts, and interchangeable with installation, I use non-commercial rationales to direct simple arrangements of existing technology, products and situations. This lets me explore the role of mechanical process within creative practice, and engage aspects of the ordinary world within a fine art environment.
