Like photograms, or shadows, these images are formed by stenciling - in this case using gravity.
Falling particles are deflected by an object, which acts as a stencil and creates an image of itself. Given the mechanical nature of the process, the particles record quite a range of spatial information, so achieving some of the qualities of a traditional drawing.
